For cable railings, you want to use a cable that is as rigid as possible and does not stretch. For most applications, we recommend 1×19 construction, type 316 stainless steel strand (cable).

1/8″ and 3/16″ Stainless Steel Cable are the most common sizes when it comes to railing applications. 1/8″ Stainless Steel Cable will all but disappear at distances over 7-10 feet and will allow you and your guests to focus on the view. 1/8″ cable and hardware are generally less expensive as well.
How far can you SPAN cable rail?
Our standard recommendation / specification is 4 foot post spacing, but you can go up to 7 feet if using a Cable Stabilizer in the middle to maintain cable spacing. The farther apart your posts are spaced, the more cable deflection will occur and this can cause unsafe conditions.
